The Firefly Franchise Tracker covers the complete Firefly universe on screen and in print — from the 2002 television series through the Serenity film and the expanded comics and companion volumes. That means 31 entries: 14 episodes, the theatrical film, 6 comic series, and 10 companion and expanded universe books. The runtime total is misleading on paper (~82 hours including books) — the television series alone runs just 11 hours.

Firefly is the rare franchise where the expanded material is widely read because there's so little of the original thing. Fox cancelled the series after airing only 11 of its 14 episodes in 2002. Joss Whedon and the cast completed the story in the 2005 film Serenity. The comics and novels that followed have built a coherent extended universe — and are some of the better franchise tie-in fiction produced around any cancelled show.

Firefly Watch Order: Series, Film, and Comics

Firefly has a well-established canonical viewing order that differs from the original broadcast sequence — Fox aired the episodes out of order, contributing to the show's poor ratings.

  • Start with the pilot: Watch Serenity (the two-part pilot, Episode 1) first. Fox originally aired The Train Job as the premiere, which is a weak entry point. The produced pilot introduces the crew properly.
  • Series (14 episodes): After the pilot, watch the remaining 12 episodes in production order. All 14 episodes were released on DVD and streaming in the correct sequence.
  • Film — Serenity (2005): Watch immediately after the series. The film was written as a conclusion to the TV story and assumes you know the characters.
  • Comics: The Firefly comics (Dark Horse) are set before, during, and after the series and film. Those Left Behind bridges the TV series and the film. Float Out is a post-film coda. Most can be read in any order after the film.
  • Companion books: The Firefly Companion volumes are behind-the-scenes reference books, not story content. Read them at any point.

Frequently Asked Questions

In what order should I watch Firefly?
Start with the two-part pilot episode Serenity (not the film) — Fox broadcast the series out of order, so use the production order. Watch all 14 episodes, then watch the Serenity film. That's the complete canonical story.
Why was Firefly cancelled?
Fox cancelled Firefly after its first season in December 2002. The network aired episodes out of production order, including refusing to air the two-part pilot that introduced the characters. Ratings suffered as a result. The subsequent cult following led to the 2005 film Serenity.
Is the Serenity film worth watching?
Yes. Serenity (2005) was written by Joss Whedon as a conclusion to the story Firefly couldn't finish. It answers several major unanswered questions from the series — particularly about the Reavers and River Tam. Most fans consider it essential viewing after the series.
Are the Firefly comics worth reading?
The comics are generally well-regarded, particularly Those Left Behind (which bridges the TV series and film) and Float Out (a post-film character piece). They're written with involvement from the original creative team and maintain the show's voice reasonably well.
Will Firefly ever be revived?
As of 2024, there is no confirmed revival. Joss Whedon's involvement in future projects is complicated by controversy. Various cast members have expressed openness to a revival, but rights issues, ensemble scheduling, and the passage of time make it unlikely in the near term.
